Early Specialized Nursing Assessment Decreases VLU Healing Time and Wound Chronicity

Author: Alice Bourke, Wound District Nurse
Presenter: Natalie Scott, Wound Clinical Nurse Specialist

The study examines the impact of early intervention in the first six weeks for new venous leg ulcer cases, within a new model of care framework. Digital wound assessment (Silhouette, ARANZ Medical) is deployed to assess and report time to heal, recurrence and healing rates.

The study findings include :

  • Value of introducing a robust evidenced based wound measurement system for monitoring - time to heal VLU; non healing alert via graph.
  • PDF Report capability supported patient referrals to Specialists
  • Nurses VLU assessment skills increased.
  • Early intervention of nursing assessment in the first 6 weeks improves overall healing outcomes and reduces chronicity.
